Caulking the log cabins

Calvary Adult Mission

"There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work."  1 Corinthians 12:5-6

Yearly, a group of dedicated volunteers join together to serve a need in our Diocese or beyond. In July of 2019, our mission trip to Galveston this year shifted from foster children to a shelter for Families in Crisis. We visited several families who lost jobs, had special needs, and were temporarily without a place to live.    They were housed in a facility with only a refrigerator and where dishes were washed in the shared bathroom sink. We provided dinner to them each day.

Our volunteers had a positive impact on these families who were very appreciative to receive the items we provided as well as people to visit with them and chat.  We identified some of their needs and provided a high chair, a portable crib, a gate for the stairs and, of course, educational reading material along with puzzles, games, and age-appropriate baby items.  And oh yes, toilet paper was a big need (there was none).

Lori Hoy was joined by Dan Bradley, Joyce Strimple, Bob Watts, Molly Powell and our out of town guests Dan Reyna and Emily.  A big “thank you” to all of them as well as Leslie Amentini and all those who supported us with donations, gifts, and prayer.  Our continuing prayer is that these families have moved on to better living conditions and that God will bless them with all their needs.

“God's Work: Our Hands” is our mantra.  We are on the lookout for projects that give us the opportunity to roll up our sleeves with light carpentry/painting work, to make a home safe and attractive for living again.  We are not skilled construction workers, but rather eager workers willing to learn.  We also look for opportunities that award us a chance to meet those we are helping.  There is time for worship, exploring, fun, and games. We have been fortunate to secure affordable accommodations and blessed with delicious meals. We receive so much more than we give.

Calvary welcomes and embraces all who join us in doing the work of Christ in our community.
