The Preston Street Community Garden
"Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat what they produce." Jeremiah 29:5
The Preston Street Community Garden was founded by Calvary Episcopal Church in 2008. Today the purpose is to serve the needs of the community of North Richmond and also to educate and involve the community in growing fresh herbs, fruits and vegetables.
In early 2015, Calvary partnered with First Baptist Church of Richmond to manage and maintain the garden. First Baptist provideds a manager for the garden. A team of volunteers from both churches and community help maintain it. There are four table beds, 29 raised beds and eight large community production beds. Fresh produce from fall and spring plantings in the community beds is donated to Helping Hands and the Women's Shelter. There are 36 fruit trees in the garden that include varieties such as citrus, apple, pear, pomegranate and fig. In addition, there is an adjacent Bell Garden that can be used for social gatherings or for meditation. It contains beautiful seasonal flowers, trees and shrubs, a fountain, an altar, an antique bell and two memorial benches.
The Preston Street Community Garden is located at North 7th Street in Richmond. Volunteers are always welcome to help out at the garden. No experience necessary, just an appreciation of gardening and desire to help others! Visitors are also welcome!
