| Setting Priorities |
I was installing my son’s booster seat for what seemed like the hundredth time this week (because we only have one) when the thought occurred to me: I do this all the time. It’s a pain, but I’m going to keep doing it. After all, there is something greater at stake: his life.
My husband and I are thinking about signing him up for horseback riding lessons and soccer. He is a natural, and he will enjoy every moment. Starting the family bus service won’t be easy, but we’ll make the necessary adjustments. Something greater is at stake: our son’s passion.
We take our child to church and LOGOS. But if it’s not convenient, he is cranky, or we have some other excuse, we’ll keep them home. But isn’t something so much greater at stake? Parents who follow Jesus will sacrifice everything for riding lessons, sports, and safety, yet when it comes to our kids’ faith formation we often sacrifice little to make those spiritual moments happen.
Something huge is at stake here. Reggie Joiner says, “One hundred years from now the only thing that will matter is a person’s relationship with Jesus Christ.”
If that is true — and I believe it is — it might be time for all of us to change our priorities.
