House for Hearts
"For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in."
Last year, Calvary Church was blessed to be a blessing to a family of nine whose house was destroyed by roof damage during Hurricane Harvey. The experience demonstrated that we can’t out give God, for Calvary was richly blessed by helping others.
Calvary is being called again to partner with God to be a blessing to a retired widow whose home was flooded by the tax day flood, rebuilt and then flooded again by Hurricane Harvey. While displaced by the flood she spent her time crocheting flowers for others, volunteering at Richmond State Center, and teaching Sunday School. Her house is at 1019 Faustino Garcia Rd, north of the Brazos River in Rosenberg. It’s in the Cumings neighborhood. What the map shows as Rustic Lane has signs for Joerger Lane.
Since Hurricane Harvey, her home has been elevated 6 to 8 feet off the ground and a ramp was built to access the front door. But with this elevation, her back door opens to a seven foot drop. Her kitchen is empty of fixtures or cabinets. Her bedroom does not have doors. Twelve windows are broken. The flooring is only plywood. The rooms are textured but not painted. While I was drawing a rough floor plan of her house, she crocheted two flowers for me, which inspired the project name.
Our goal is not a complete renovation of the house but enough to allow the widow to move back in. To do this, we need to build a porch and stairway for a fire escape, hang bedroom doors, install sink, cabinets and stove in the kitchen, and do some electrical and plumbing installation for garbage disposal and microwave.
We believe that as the people of Calvary Episcopal Church, empowered by the Holy Spirit and the love of Jesus, we seek to embrace all ages in our journey of faith through these Core Values:
